But he began to work on the important autobiographical piece The Prelude. The main effect on Wordsworth was that he became homesick. Wordsworth, Dorothy, and Coleridge then traveled to Germany in the autumn of 1798. He wrote a poem about daffodils and the Lake District. Here, Wordsworth also gives his famous definition of poetry as "the spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings from emotions recollected in tranquility."Ī fourth and final edition of Lyrical Ballads was published in 1805. In it, Wordsworth discusses what he sees as the elements of a new type of poetry, one based on the "real language of men" and which avoids the poetic diction of much eighteenth-century poetry. Together, Wordsworth and Coleridge produced Lyrical Ballads (1798), an important work in the English Romantic movement. War between France and Britain prevented him from seeing Annette and Caroline again for several years. But he supported Annette Vallon and his daughter as best he could in later life. Because he was poor and there were tensions between Britain and France, he returned alone to England the next year. He fell in love with a French woman, Annette Vallon, who in 1792 gave birth to their child, Caroline. In November 1791, Wordsworth returned to France and took a walking tour of Europe that included the Alps and Italy. Three years later, in 1790, he visited Revolutionary France and supported the Republican movement, although the Reign of Terror later made him change his mind.(see Prelude book 10) The following year, he graduated from Cambridge. Wordsworth went to St John's College, Cambridge in 1787. It took him many years, and much writing, to recover from the death of his parents. In 1783 his father, a lawyer and a solicitor, died.Īlthough many aspects of his boyhood were positive, he remembered times of loneliness and anxiety. After the death of his mother in 1778, his father sent him to Hawkshead Grammar School. Wordsworth was born as second of five children in the Lake District.
In 1805 William's brother died at sea, in 1810 he was alienated by his best friend Coleridge and in 1812 he lost 2 of his five children. With new income he had married Mary Hutchinson and had 5 children by 1810, but since 1805 William he has been constantly hit by depression. After a few months he had received an inheritance that was owed by the lord that commanded William's father. The Peace of Amiens in 1802 allowed William and his sister to visit his wife in France. The lyrical ballads resulted in an early peak of William's works.

In 1797-1798 they shared their poetry, their views and eventually began the planning of the Lyrical Ballads. Coleridge and William easily befriended each other. In 1795 he met Samuel Taylor Coleridge who eventually created the romantic era with their joint publications Lyrical Ballads. In 1794 he met with his sister Dorothy who was a major support for William by becoming his moral support, house keeper, poem contributor and companion until the 1830's when her mental state became terrible. After he ran out of money in the following year he had to return to Britain.
